The Old Hall opens stunning new orangery
The eagerly awaited opening of the Orangery at The Old Hall, in Ely, is doubly exciting for us. We have worked on the restoration of the Jacobean manor house for over 20 years – first as a family home, then as a bed and breakfast and eventually creating the exclusive venue for weddings, private functions and restaurant dining.
The magnificent new orangery boasts floor to ceiling, oak-framed glass windows, giving stunning views across landscaped grounds, lakes and countryside towards Ely cathedral and can accommodate 130 guests for wedding ceremonies and dining.
We work with specialist partners on listed buildings, which require close liaison and sympathetic development.
Pippa Jacob, our Associate Partner said: “My father, Nick Jacob, has worked on The Old Hall for many years but the Orangery is the first project for me personally. Our client has a passion for design and a keen eye for detail so, with the expert team at Robson Construction, it has been a pleasure to help deliver the project.
“We were delighted to attend the grand opening and see the space in use. It came to life in the evening with the twinkling star lights in the coffered ceiling, the contemporary lighting on the oak posts and the statement chandelier. The oak structure perfectly framed the view as the sun set over Ely. We are certain that the new building will help further establish The Old Hall as one of the most sought-after wedding venues outside of London.”
After delays due to the pandemic, the Orangery’s opening party was a huge success on May 11 – and it has very much been worth the wait according to owner Alison Morbey.
Alison said: “We are so excited that our Orangery is now completed…. the floor to ceiling glass gives an impressive view of the Cathedral and we’re excited to offer a menu to match. We’ll feature heritage favourites, modern takes and a constantly changing selection of dishes. The new development blends seamlessly with the beauty of the existing building and, while every part of the house is special in its own way, the unobstructed cathedral views really do give our Orangery something unique.”
